SEDIMENT FLUSHING OPERATIONS AT HYDROPOWER STATIONS

The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) wishes to inform all stakeholders and the public that scheduled sediment flushing operations at all major hydropower stations (Nkula, Tedzani, and Kapichira) are ongoing and will continue every weekend from 9:00 PM on Saturdays to 4:00 AM on Sundays until the end of June 2026.

These sediment flushing activities are essential maintenance works aimed at removing accumulated silt and debris from the power station intakes. This process is critical for improving water flow and enhancing overall power generation efficiency.

Please be advised that during each scheduled 7-hour nighttime maintenance window, power generation at the specific station undergoing flushing will be temporarily suspended.

The operations will follow a rotational schedule, with one power station undergoing the silt flushing per weekend, until the full cycle is completed. This rotation will continue every weekend through June 2026.

Despite the temporary reduction in power generation at the affected station, EGENCO assures all stakeholders and the public that it will maximize power generation from other hydropower stations not undergoing maintenance, as well as from diesel power plants, to help maintain stable electricity supply during these periods.

EGENCO sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience these outages may cause and greatly appreciate the understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders as we work to ensure improved and reliable power generation.
