EGENCO stands for Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited.

EGENCO is mandated to generate and sell power in Malawi.

EGENCO was incorporated on 9th September 2016 and started its full operations on 1st January 2017.

The Government of Malawi (GoM) through the Power Sector Reform Programme unbundled the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi Ltd (ESCOM) by carving out the power generation activity and creating a Generator, the Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Ltd (EGENCO). EGENCO was incorporated on 9th September 2016 as a public company under the Companies Act (Cap 46:03) wholly owned by the Government of Malawi and started its full operations on 1st January 2017.

EGENCO generates power and sell it to ESCOM. ESCOM transmit, Distribute and retail the power among other things.

EGENCO was incorporated as a public company under the Companies Act (Cap 46:03) and is wholly owned by the Government of Malawi.

EGENCO operates four hydro power stations: Nkula, Tedzani, Kapichira and Wovwe. It also operates diesel power plants and thermal power plants in Lilongwe and Mzuzu. The Company also operates Likoma and Chizumulu hybrid (solar and diesel) stations.

As at 16 August 2021, GENCO has a total installed generation capacity of 441.95MW, with 390.55MW from hydro power plants and 51.4MW from thermal power plants.

EGENCO has implemented several projects which has resulted in adding 80 Megawatts to the national grid. Notable achievements include ending of power shortages in the country, Likoma Solar, Tedzani IV, Nkula A project, peaking plants, dredging and many other projects.
