EMERGENCY OUTAGE OF TEDZANI POWER STATION ON SUNDAY 5TH FEBRUARY 2023

Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) wishes to notify all stakeholders and the general public that the company has planned a 4-hour outage of Tedzani Power Station on Sunday 5 February 2023 from 08h00 to 12h00 to facilitate removal of excessive trash that has clogged coarse screens.

The work will require complete shutdown of Tedzani Power Stations (121.1MW) and partial lowering of the head-pond level to create safe working environment for the team working on the trash removal works. This means 121.1MW will not be available for supply to the national grid during this stated period. Nkula Hydro and Wovwe mini Hydro plant with capacities of 135.1MW and 4.5MW will be available to the grid.

Trash removal is necessary to prevent excessive clogging of fine screens thereby avoiding frequent shut down of Tedzani machines due to reduction in penstock pressures. Further reduction of penstock pressures is risky as the intake structures can be destroyed due to such excessive differential pressure.

EGENCO will continue to run all available diesel generators during the outage to supplement the available hydro capacity.

EGENCO sincerely regrets any inconvenience that may be caused by the outage of Tedzani Power Station.
