NKULA B SHUT DOWN DUE TO BURST BYPASS PIPE

Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) wishes to inform its stakeholders and the general public that Nkula B Power Station has been shut down due to burst bypass pipe of one of the five machines.

To prevent flooding of the station, further damage to the rest of the machines, and to allow for repairs, the Nkula B intake tunnel has been dewatered and consequently shutting down the station. This means 100MW is currently not available for supply to ESCOM.

Meanwhile, investigations to establish the cause of the burst and works to repair the bypass pipe are underway. We will keep the public updated once preliminary works and assessment of the extent of damage is complete.

Currently EGENCO is running all the available diesel power plants to minimize the impact of the Nkula B shutdown.
