Power Generation Update

Power Generation Update

Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) wishes to update all stakeholders and the public on the status of hydropower generation. As of 6 May 2025, the status is as follows

Nkula Power Stations

All units at Nkula A and Nkula B are operational, except for one 20MW unit at Nkula B, which is currently experiencing a technical fault. Our teams are actively working around the clock to rectify the problem.

Kapichira Power Station

Three out of four units are running at Kapichira Power Station. Unit 3 (32.4MW) is out of service due to a switchgear fault. Engineers from China, the Original Equipment Manufacturers, visited the country from 20 to 28 April 2025 to assess the fault and devise solutions. The Engineers have since returned to China and will return with the required expertise and spare parts to fix the switchgear. Meanwhile efforts are underway to reconnect the Unit to national grid through temporary solution while awaiting permanent one upon remobilization of the original manufacturer.

Tedzani Power Station

All units are running at Tedzani except for Unit 5 (31MW). The Unit is out of service due to burnt generator stator windings. A contract has been signed with the Original Equipment Manufacturers to rectify the fault.

Wovwe Power Station

All units are running and on load.

In summary, except for the three machines mentioned above totaling 83.4MW, all units in the EGENCO power generating system are running and on load. We would like to take this opportunity to assure all stakeholders that we are working tirelessly to bring these three machines back online and ensure that all 22 hydropower generating units are operational. We shall keep all stakeholders updated on the progress of the restoration works.

EGENCO sincerely regrets any inconvenience caused by the outage of these units.
