POWER GENERATION UPDATE

Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) wishes to update all stakeholders and the public that we have successfully made partial restoration of previously faulty machines. As of 19:25 hrs. yesterday, Nkula B Unit 5 (20 MW) was brought back online.

This means that from our hydropower plants, only Tedzani III Unit 5 (31 MW) remains out of service. As pointed out earlier, we are awaiting the arrival of engineers from the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in Austria later this month to repair the unit.

We remain fully committed to restoring the remaining unit as quickly as possible and minimizing the impact on power supply.

We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused by the recent faults.

Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) wishes to inform all stakeholders and the public of a temporary reduction in hydropower generation capacity due to technical faults affecting some of our machines.

As of today, our available generation capacity stands at 347.35 MW. Two major units are currently out of service:

  • Tedzani III Unit 5 (31 MW) has been offline since December 2024 due to burnt generator stator windings. We have finalized a contract with the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of Austria to repair the machine. The OEM is mobilizing materials, and their engineers are expected to arrive in Malawi later this month to carry out the repairs.
  • Nkula B Unit 5 (20 MW) failed to start upon restoration after replacement of turbine shaft seal which commenced on Friday, 31st October 2025 and completed last evening. Our engineering team is working diligently to restore this Unit.

Our diesel generators which supplement power generation capacity in times of high demand or insufficient hydro generation capacity have been affected by the scarcity of diesel fuel.

This means 51 MW of hydro capacity is currently unavailable for supply to ESCOM. We remain fully committed to restoring these units as quickly as possible and minimizing the impact on power supply.
