MAINTENANCE WORKS AT TEDZANI POWER STATION

MAINTENANCE WORKS AT TEDZANI POWER STATION

Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) wishes to inform its Stakeholders and the general public that the Company will carry out maintenance works at its Tedzani Hydro Power Station on 7th January 2024 from 06:00am to 04:00pm. The works will involve retrieving of a trash rake bucket and inspection of intake screens at the Power Station’s intake dam.

The trash rake bucket was stuck underwater, at the bottom of the intake dam during trash raking operations in February 2023. EGENCO has managed to locate the trash rake bucket in the dam and partly dig it out during previous maintenance works at Tedzani Power Station. The Company now intends to completely retrieve the trash rake bucket from the dam using an 80 tonne mobile crane.

In order to carry out these works, EGENCO will have to drain the dam at the Tedzani Power Station intake to allow for a safe working environment for its engineers and divers. Due to this, there will be no power generation at Tedzani Power Station during the period of the maintenance works.

The maintenance works are essential and need to be carried out for smooth trash raking operations at the power station’s intake in order to prevent trash, debris and large objects from entering into the water tunnel and damaging underwater turbine parts and other related power generation equipment.

The works to retrieve the trash rake bucket were previously hindered by the unavailability of the Kapichira Power Station and persistent high water flows in the Shire River.

While power generation at Tedzani will be halted to allow for the maintenance works, EGENCO is assuring its Stakeholders and the general public that power generation at its other Power Stations such as Nkula, Kapichira and Wovwe will be in full operation. EGENCO will also operate all available diesel generators to supplement the available hydro capacity.

EGENCO sincerely regrets any inconvenience these maintenance works may cause.
