KAMMWAMBA COAL FIRED POWER PLANT

KAMMWAMBA COAL FIRED POWER PLANT

Project Description

This is a 300MW coal-fired power plant that will be implemented by EGENCO. The power station will be located in the Kammwamba area in the town of Zalewa, Neno District, the Southern Region of Malawi, approximately 60 kilometres by road, north-west of the city of Blantyre.

A feasibility study which started in August 2019 is currently underway and is expected to be completed by September 2021. The study has two main components, namely:

  • Updating of a previous techno-economic feasibility study and ESIA (Environmental and Social Impact Assessment).
  • Local coal resource exploration.

Upon completion of the feasibility study, EGENCO shall embark on seeking project financing. The project will take about three years to completion after reaching financial closure. Tentatively, we are looking at 2024. All being equal as far as financing arrangement is concerned.

The project is in line with EGENCO’s diversification objectives where the company seeks to improve its power generation mix from being 95% hydro based to 76% hydro based in 5 years.

Once started, the project will take about three years to complete. Tentatively, it is expected to be ready by/in 2024.
