MAINTENANCE WORKS AT NKULA POWER STATION

MAINTENANCE WORKS AT NKULA POWER STATION

The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) is informing all stakeholders and the general public that it will carry out emergency maintenance works at its Nkula Power Station on Sunday, 4 September 2022, from 7 o’clock in the morning to 5 o’clock in the evening. The works will involve installation of new fine trash screens. EGENCO’s divers discovered the old damaged fine trash screens during previous screen inspection works that were conducted on 30 July 2022.

In order to install the new screens, EGENCO will have to drain the dam at its Nkula Power Station intake. Since the dam will not have water, EGENCO’s machines at Nkula Power Station will not be able to generate electricity. As such, 135MW from both Nkula A and Nkula B Power Plants will not be available to the national grid while 125MW will be available from Tedzani and Wovwe Power Stations.

EGENCO will have to drain the water reservoir to allow for a safe working environment for its divers, welders, engineers and other members of staff that will be conducting the works at the intake.

These works are very necessary to be carried out in order to prevent trash and large objects from entering into the water tunnel, which can damage underwater turbine parts and other auxiliary power generating equipment.

In order to mitigate the impact of the reduced power generation, EGENCO will operate all available diesel generators to supplement the available 125MW hydro capacity.

EGENCO sincerely regrets any inconvenience that may be caused due to these maintenance works.
