IGNITING AMBITIONS: EGENCO WOMEN ENGINEERS INSPIRE FEMALE STUDENTS

Female engineers and technicians from the Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) on Friday, 6 March 2026 visited Nkula Community Day Secondary School and Tedzani Primary School ahead of this year’s International Women’s Day commemorations to encourage female students to work hard in school and pursue careers in engineering and other technical fields.

Sharing their personal career journeys and experiences working in Malawi’s power generation sector, the engineers inspired the students to believe that girls can succeed in professions traditionally dominated by men.

EGENCO’s Social Safeguard and Gender Protection Specialist, Walusungu Chipeta, encouraged both boys and girls to work together, support each other and remain committed to education.

Speaking during the visit, EGENCO’s Social Safeguards and Gender Protection Specialist, Walusungu Chipeta, urged students to remain focused on their education and to support one another in achieving their goals.

“If you work hard and remain committed to your studies, there is nothing stopping you from becoming an engineer, or anything that you would like to be.” Chipeta told the students.

One of the students, Christina Kuyokwa, described the moment as life changing, saying the interaction encouraged her to work harder in school.

“Seeing these engineers has motivated me to work harder so that I can also become an engineer,” said Christina.

During the visit, the EGENCO team also donated sanitary pads and learning materials to support the girls’ education and help improve their school attendance.

EGENCO employees distribute sanitary pads and learning materials to support girls’ education and school attendance.

The initiative forms part of EGENCO’s efforts to promote greater representation of women in engineering and other science, technology and mathematics fields in the country.
