EGENCO ENGAGES NKHOTAKOTA DISTRICT AND LOCAL LEADERS ON 100-MEGAWATT HYDROPOWER PROJECT
Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) on Wednesday 10th September 2025, engaged Nkhotakota District Council and local leaders from the district on the Chasombo-Chizuma Hydropower Project, a proposed 100-megawatt (MW) hydropower station to be located along the Bua River within the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, in Nkhotakota District.
Speaking during the meeting, Nkhotakota District Council’s Director of Planning and Development, Mathias Bulugama, commended EGENCO for engaging the district and local leaders at the early stages of the project.
“Your engagement with us stakeholders demonstrates real commitment. This project has the potential to transform not only Nkhotakota but also Malawi as a whole.” Said Bulugama.
Once developed, the Chasombo-Chizuma Hydropower Project will be Malawi’s first major power station in the central region, outside the Shire River, where more than 90% of the country’s power is currently generated.
The feasibility study, funded by EGENCO at a cost of USD 1.7 million (approximately MWK 3 billion), is expected to conclude by June 2026. It will assess the project’s technical, economic, environmental, and social viability.
