ENERGY MINISTER VISITS EGENCO – IMPRESSED WITH THE PROGRESS OF TEDZANI IV

The newly appointed Minister of Energy, Hon. Newton Kambala on Tuesday, 21st July 2020, visited EGENCO’s Tedzani and Nkula Power Stations where he toured some of the works and projects being undertaken by the electricity generation company.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the tour, the Minister said he was impressed with the progress of Tedzani IV project.

“I am happy to tell Malawians that Tedzani IV power station will soon be completed and the country will add more power to its generation capacity. I am pleased to note that the contractor will be completing the project by February 2021, which is earlier than planned.” Said the Minister.

While acknowledging that Malawi faces energy challenges, the Minister said he look forward to working with EGENCO as partners in tackling these energy problems and ensure that Malawi is energy sufficient.

The Minister later held an in-house meeting with EGENCO management where he expressed satisfaction with the work that he had seen.

“I have seen that you are a hardworking team with motivated staff – this is very encouraging. I will go back to Blantyre a happy man and look forward to reporting to the President what I have seen today.” The Minister said.

However, The Minister urged EGENCO’s management to desist from corruption as it is reported among other parastatals. He further demanded that the company send him reports so that he can should assess its financial health.

EGENCO’s Chief Executive Officer, William Liabunya, welcomed the Minister’s visit saying that it shows government’s commitment.

“We are happy with the Minister’s visit today. He has encouraged us and assured us of government’s support in our work.” Said Liabunya.
