The Electricity Generation Company Malawi (Limited) (EGENCO) on Thursday, 5 March 2026, launched its 2026 tree planting exercise along the banks of Nkhonde river at Ulongwe in Balaka District aimed at protecting catchment areas that support its work of hydropower generation along the Shire river.
Graced by the honorable Minister of Energy and Mining, Dr. Jean Mathanga, the event united different stakeholders including local leaders, community members, the corporate world and government officials in tackling the increasing challenge of environmental degradation affecting the Shire River, the country’s major source of hydropower generation.

“Shire River is the bedrock of power generation in Malawi. It is very important that we take care of it along with all tributaries that feed into it so that power generation is not hindered.” Said the Minister while commending EGENCO for taking a leading role in conserving the environment along the Shire River corridor.
EGENCO’s Chief Executive Officer, William Liabunya, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to conserving the environment, noting that the annual tree planting exercise is a key component of its long-term strategy to combat environmental degradation.

“This initiative reaffirms our commitment to safeguarding the environment while ensuring reliable power production for national development.” Said Liabunya while pledging that the Company aims to plant up to one million tree seedlings overtime.
TOOLS FOR TREE CONSERVATION: The Minister of Energy, honorable Dr. Jean Mathanga, presents tools to Village Natural Resource Management Committees for conserving the planted tree seedlings.
This year’s tree‑planting exercise saw 7,000 seedlings planted along the banks of Nkhonde and Nkasi rivers. An additional 8,000 seedlings have been planted by EGENCO employees within their compounds and at various power stations, bringing the total number of seedlings planted by the company this year to 15,000.
