EGENCO ENGAGES STAKEHOLDERS ON 100 MEGAWATTS CHASOMBO – CHIZUMA HYDROWER PROJECT
Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) on Thursday, 21st August 2025, engaged key stakeholders in Nkhotakota on its feasibility study for the Chasombo-Chizuma Hydropower Project, a proposed 100-megawatt (MW) hydropower station to be located along the Bua River within the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, in Nkhotakota District.
EGENCO’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Maxon Chitawo, said the meeting was held to share key information on the benefits and impacts of the project with the stakeholders.
“As with any major infrastructure project, there will be benefits and impact on surrounding communities and stakeholders. That is why we considered it essential to meet with you first—so that we embark on this journey together, with shared understanding.” Said Chitawo.
Representing the District Commissioner for Nkhotakota District Council, Chief Education Officer, Marcel Elefala, assured EGENCO of the Council’s support saying the project is important for the development of the nation and Nkhotakota District.
“This project is not only important for the nation, but it is also a gift to Nkhotakota District.” Said Elefala whilst applauding EGENCO for involving stakeholders in the early stages of the project.

Once developed, the Chasombo-Chizuma Hydropower Project will be Malawi’s first major power station in the central region, outside the Shire River, where more than 90% of the country’s power is currently generated.
The feasibility study, funded by EGENCO at a cost of USD 1.7 million (approximately MWK 3 billion), is expected to conclude by June 2026. It will assess the project’s technical, economic, environmental, and social viability.
