OUTAGE OF TEDZANI III UNIT 6

Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) wishes to inform all stakeholders and the general public that there will be an outage of Tedzani III unit number 6 from 05th August 2022 08h00 – 07th August 2022 17h00 in order to allow for replacement of worn out shaft seals. This means 31 megawatts of hydropower will not be available for supply to the national grid.

As you may be aware, Tedzani III has 2 units (unit 5 and 6 with a combined total of 62 megawatts). The shaft seals for these units are completely worn out to an extent that the generation capacity of each of the units was restricted to only 25MW to avoid flooding the powerhouse. The work will therefore involve replacement of the worn out shaft seals on unit number 6 so that the unit can once again begin to produce its 31megawatt maximum capacity. The work will further involve carrying out a mandatory eight monthly routine preventive maintenance of the unit.

In order to mitigate the impact of Tedzani III unit number 6 outage, EGENCO will continue to run all available diesel power plants.

EGENCO sincerely regrets any inconvenience that may be caused by the outage of Tedzani III unit 6.
