OUTAGE OF NKULA A AND B ON SUNDAY 25 SEPTEMBER 2022 AND EVERY SUNDAY IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2022

Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) wishes to inform all stakeholders and the general public that there will be outages of Nkula A and B on every Sunday beginning 25th September until 30th October 2022 for 10 hours on each Sunday starting from 7:00am to 5:00pm, to allow for installation of new fine screens. This follows the findings by our divers on 30th July 2022 when they discovered missing trash screens. This means 135.1 megawatts out of the total currently available hydropower capacity of 252.55MW will not be available for supply to the national grid on the Sundays for the stated period.

The new fine trash screens installation process will require draining the dam at Nkula Power Station intake and consequently completely shutting down Nkula A and B to allow for safe working environment for our engineers, welders and divers.

These works are necessary to ensure that no trash gets into the tunnel which could damage the machine turbines and underwater parts. It is therefore very important that we finish these works before the onset of the rain season and therefore have the tunnel and machine turbines protected from trash and debris including logs and rolling rocks. Thus ensuring sustained and efficient power generation at Nkula B power station.

In order to mitigate the impact of Nkula A and B outage, EGENCO will continue to run all available hydropower plants at Tedzani and Wovwe Power Stations including available diesel generators.

EGENCO sincerely regrets any inconvenience that may be caused by the outage.
