His Excellency Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi, on Wednesday 31 October 2018, officially commissioned Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO)’s Rehabilitated, Modernized and Upgraded Nkula ‘A’ Hydropower Plant in Neno district.
In his address, President Mutharika said government is committed to end power challenges that the country is experiencing due to over dependency on the Shire River and lack of serious investments in the power sector for a long time.
“Now were are diversifying into coal, gas, wind and solar power generations. We will continue to pursue medium to long-term measures to end energy problems once and for all”, said Mutharika.
Nkula ‘A’ was Rehabilitated, Modernized and Upgraded as part of the United States (USA) $350.7 million compact which Malawi through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and Millennium Challenge Account (MCC) - Malawi has been implementing for the past five years. The project has seen Nkula ‘A’ having additional 12 megawatts. It can now produce 36 megawatts. Before upgrading, it could only produce 24 megawatts.
